Posted this in chat last night. Figured I'd post it here, too, for those who missed it.
The Student Recreation Center is situated at the top of a very tall, very steep hill. By the time I reached it, I was breathing hard and drenched with sweat. I signed in at the front desk and dug through my gym bag for quarters to rent a locker.
"Reina!"
I turned around. Shane had entered the lobby from the weight room. He wore a tank top and a black shorts, and had a towel tossed over one shoulder. He was smiling at me. I smiled back, but something inside me squirmed. "Hey there. Fancy meeting you here."
He laughed. "Yeah, right." He walked towards me and gave me a quick one-armed hug. "Sorry--don't want to get you all sweaty, you know."
I chuckled and shook my head. "Hey, I came here to get sweaty."
He smiled and looked at me for a minute. I met his gaze, then glanced away. The squirming was getting worse. I wasn't comfortable with him, and that bothered me. He was my boyfriend.
And some girlfriend you've been lately, huh? He wouldn't be smiling half so warmly if he knew you'd been plastered all over your professor last night.
"I'm glad we ran into each other," Shane said, and bent down to give me a soft kiss. His hands were on my waist, mine wrapped around his neck. It was an old, comfortable position, so easy to mindlessly slide into. Their was light and warmth in Shane's eyes as he lifted and smiled down at me. I liked the warmth of his chest, the simple caress of his touch at my waist. I liked the feeling of comfort and protection that enveloped me when his arms were around me.
Our gazes met. I could see the heat within him, the slow shift from simple affection to something more. Time slowed as he leaned over me again, his face lowering towards mine. Our lips touched, a soft caress, a wonderful warmth. His hands lifted to cup my cheeks, and his lips parted.
The squirming grabbed my gut and twisted. I gasped and pulled away. "Oh gods. I can't--"
"Reina? Honey, are you okay?"
I shook my head. I couldn't breath. My stomach was a hard, frozen knot. "I can't. I'm sorry, Shane. I just--I can't."
The first hints of confusion creased his brow. "What's the matter? Are you ill?"
I shook my head. "I need some air." I couldn't manage more than a whisper. I staggered outside and leaned back against the Rec's bricks. They were hot from the dying sun and bathed in a warm orange light. I slid to the ground and buried my face in my thighs.
How the fuck was I supposed to do this? How could I get into a relationship with Greer, when I was still involved with Shane? How could I fool around behind Shane's back, when he'd always been there for me?
I snorted and shook my head. What existed between me and Professor Greer couldn't even be called a relationship. It had been a kiss. I wanted to say it had been nothing, but that was a lie, too. It had been a hell of a lot more than nothing.
